The question of the soul and the power of evolution – Why man cannot scientifically justify his special position

Man has always regarded himself as the crown of creation, as the being who has a special dignity and a higher value than all other living beings on this planet. This conviction runs through the entire history of mankind and forms the foundation of almost all religious, philosophical and legal systems that have ever been devised. But in the past centuriesscience has begun to shake the foundations of this self-understanding, and the theory of evolution in particular radically questions the assumption of a human special position. The following text examines why the belief in an immortal soul is incompatible with the insights of modern biology and why this insight is profound in so many peopleThis is about nothing less than the question of what actually distinguishes man from animals and whether there is any scientifically tenable basis for the claimed moral superiority of our species.
The Most Powerful Species and Their Moral Confidence
There is no reasonable doubt that modern man is the most powerful species that has ever populated the earth. No other species has been able to reshape the entire planet according to their ideas, change ecosystems on an unprecedented scale and determine the fate of countless other living beings. At the same time, people are all too happy to believe that they are notonly more powerful, but also morally superior to all other creatures. He is firmly convinced that his own life has an incomparably greater value than the life of a pig, an elephant or a wolf. This conviction is so taken for granted that it is hardly ever seriously questioned, although on closer inspection it is by no means soit is obvious how it may seem at first glance.
Does mere power set a right to higher value?
The decisive question is whether power alone can establish a right and whether the life of a human being should be worth more than the life of an animal only because the human collective is more powerful than the collective of animals. This question can be illustrated excellently if one uses the comparison between two states that have very differentA large, wealthy, and militarily superior country has far more influence than a poor, broken, and powerless country. But does this unequal distribution of power automatically mean that the inhabitants of the powerful country have a higher intrinsic value than the inhabitants of the weak country? Most people would strongly deny this question andinsist that the value of a human life must not depend on the geopolitical strength of his homeland.
The Unjust Practice of Global Power Distribution
In the lived reality, of course, things look different, because in the education, health and security of the average citizen of a rich and powerful country, many times what is given to a person in a poor and powerless country is invested. If a citizen of a powerful state is killed, this leads to asignificantly louder outcry and far more diplomatic reactions than when a citizen of a weak state is forcibly killed. According to the general moral conviction of mankind, however, this is only an unjust consequence of the geopolitical distribution of power and by no means an expression of an actual difference in value. A child who is in theinhospitable mountains of a crisis region is therefore considered just as sacred and worthy of protection as a child growing up in a wealthy residential area of a large western city. The distribution of power may be unjust, but it does not make a difference in the value of the lives involved.
The supposedly deeper reason for the human special position
If, on the other hand, man puts his own children above the piglets of a sow, then he wants to recognize something deeper than merely the ecological distribution of power between species. He wants to believe that human life is indeed superior to animal life in a fundamental and essential way. People are all too happy to convince themselves that they have awhich is not only responsible for its immense power, but at the same time morally justifies its privileged position in the fabric of living beings. This quality should be, as it were, a spark that lifts man out of the ranks of all other creatures and gives him an incomparable dignity. But what exactly is this unique humanSpark on which to base the entire moral special position?
The traditional response of monotheistic religions
The traditional answer of the great monotheistic faiths is that only man has an immortal soul that survives his body and ensures him an eternal existence. As the mortal body decays and rots after death, the soul continues to journey toward redemption or damnation, becoming either everlasting joy orthe animals, on the other hand, according to this view, have no soul and therefore have no part in this great cosmic drama of redemption and damnation. They only live a few years, then they die and disappear forever into nothingness, leaving nothing eternal behind. From this point of view, the compelling conclusion arises that manshould care much more for the immortal human souls than for the perishable bodies of animals.
A myth of unbroken power
This idea is by no means a harmless fairy tale from the childhood of humanity, but an extremely powerful myth that still determines the lives of billions of people and animals on this planet today. The deep conviction that man possesses an immortal soul, while animals possess only a perishable body, forms acentral and indispensable pillars of our entire legal, political and economic system. It explains and justifies why, in the eyes of most people, it is perfectly fine for people to kill animals in order to obtain food or simply to enjoy themselves. Without faith in the soul, this mass killing of living beings would be far more difficult to justify, because then only the naked power would remain as a justification. Soul belief thus gives human domination over animals a moral and metaphysical legitimacy that would simply be lacking without it.
The Scientific Refutation of Soul Belief
The latest scientific findings, of course, blatantly oppose this monotheistic myth and make it appear in an increasingly questionable light. After all, the countless laboratory experiments confirm at least part of the religious claim, because the animals actually have no soul, as the doctrines proclaim. All the painstaking studiesand meticulous investigations carried out over the decades could not detect the slightest trace of a soul in pigs, rats or monkeys. But the same experiments and research seriously shake the second and far more important part of the monotheistic myth, namely the claim that man does indeed possess a soul.Scientists have subjected modern man to tens of thousands of strange and elaborate experiments, looking into every nook and cranny of his heart and every turn of his brain, without ever finding a magic spark.
The lack of evidence and the contradiction to evolution
To this day, there is no scientific evidence that man, unlike animals, has a soul, and this finding is extremely worrying for religious traditions. One could argue, of course, that scientists simply have to keep searching and that they have not yet found the soul just because they have not found it accurately enoughbut the life sciences do not only doubt the existence of a soul, because there is no empirical evidence for this so far. They doubt this above all because the very idea of a soul contradicts the most fundamental principles of evolution and is simply incompatible with them. This fundamental contradiction is also the actualThis is the reason for the unbridled hatred and fierce rejection that the theory of evolution has provoked in many believers to this day.
The persistent rejection of evolution
A large-scale opinion poll in the United States has revealed that only a small fraction of the population believes that man was created by natural selection alone without any divine cooperation. About a third of the respondents believe that although humans emerged from previous forms of life in the course of a long process, a higher being has thisguided and directed throughout the entire process. Almost half of the respondents even think that a creator god created humans in their current form within a very short period of time in Earth’s history. It is particularly noteworthy that the degree of formal education has virtually no effect on these beliefs. Even among people with the highest academic degreesbelieves a significant proportion in the literal story of creation, while only a minority accept natural selection as the sole explanation for the origin of our species.
The demand for a supposed alternative
Although the schools are obviously not particularly successful in teaching the theory of evolution and many students do not internalize the content, religious zealots nevertheless insist that the theory of evolution should not be taught in class at all. Instead, they demand that children also be introduced to the idea of an intelligent design thataccording to which all organisms were created by the plan of a higher intelligence. These zealots demand that both explanations should be presented equally to the students and then let them decide for themselves which one they want to believe. At first glance, this demand for a balanced presentation may seem reasonable and fair.however, it reveals a profound lack of understanding of what scientific theories are and how they differ from beliefs.
Why the theory of evolution is fought differently than other theories
The legitimate question arises as to why the theory of evolution encounters such vehement reservations, while no one has anything to complain about the theory of relativity or quantum mechanics and no one calls for their abolition. No politician would come up with the idea that children should also be confronted with alternative theories about matter, energy, space and time.at first glance, the ideas of evolution seem far less threatening than the egregious statements of modern physics. The theory of evolution is based on the simple and clear principle of survival of the most adapted, an idea that seems almost banal. The theory of relativity and quantum mechanics, on the other hand, claim that you can bend space and time, something canemerge out of nowhere and a living being can be in two states at the same time.
The real reason for the fear of evolution
These physical statements make a mockery of our common sense, and yet no one wants to protect innocent schoolchildren from these scandalous ideas or forbid their mediation. The reason for this is very simple: the theory of relativity does not bring anyone up because it does not contradict any of our cherished beliefs about ourselves.Humans don’t care in the least whether space and time are absolute or relative, and they don’t care if you can put a dent in the fabric of the universe. The theory of evolution, on the other hand, has robbed us of our souls and thus hit us at one of the most sensitive points of our self-understanding. If one understands the theory of evolution correctly, then one recognizesinevitably that there is no immortal soul, and this is a deeply frightening thought not only for believers.
The fear of the seculars of the loss of the eternal core
This thought is also worrying for many secular people who, although they do not adhere to a clear religious doctrine, still want to maintain that each person has an eternal individual core. They want to believe that this core remains unchanged throughout life and even survives death unscathed, even if they do not use a religious name for itthe literal meaning of the word individual is something that cannot be shared, and it is precisely this indivisibility that is understood as the essential characteristic of the true self. According to this view, the fact that a person is indivisible implies that his true self is a holistic and coherent entity and not a mere collection of individual parts. The core of being supposedly survives from one moment to the next without losing anything or absorbing anything new.
The constant change of the body and the illusion of constancy
One’s own body and brain are subject to an ongoing process of change, in which nerve cells fire, hormones flow through the bloodstream, and muscles contract and relax again. Your own personality, your own desires and your own relationships never stand still and can change completely over the years and decades and create a newAntlitz annehmen.
