The forgotten place on Mönchsgasse -Bresewitz’s house and the spiritual cradle of Sorbian education

The Brusewitz’s house once stood on the corner of today’s Mönchsgasse, whose original name Hinder refers to the Monchen to the former Franciscan monastery. This building shaped the urban image for centuries before falling victim to the structural decay in the late phase of the recent past. The decision to demolish was made because the substance was notallowed maintenance measures more. Nevertheless, the memory of this site remains alive, because it has long embodied the intellectual awakening of an entire region. The loss of the house marks a painful gap in the structural history of Upper Lusatia.
A center of educational development
In the early phase of the modern era until the late end of that time, the building served as the original teacher training seminar in Bautzen. This step turned the place into a central hub of educational reorganization in Upper Lusatia. Sorbian and German students found space for their learning together, regardless of their religious ties. This openTeaching tradition created a special atmosphere of exchange that sustainably strengthened the cultural and social interdependence of the region. Daily teaching encouraged an understanding that went beyond the boundaries of the individual communities.

Karl August Katzer, Johann Wehle, Johann Georg Melde, Johannes Bartke, Michael Rostock and Johann Traugott Mutschink went through their academic preparation here. The majority of students came from modest circumstances and knew the everyday worries of the working villageown view. This immediate experience created a deep feeling for the living conditions of the common population. As a result, the later teachers developed an unshakable understanding of the urgent questions of their time.
Progressive spirit under the leadership of Dressler
Under the direction of the director Dreßler, the seminar developed an educational and political spirit that went far beyond the usual curricula. This progressive orientation gave the institution an excellent reputation in democratic circles and leading German educators. Diesterweg particularly appreciated the work here and recognized the high value of thiseducational institution. The building was not only a space for knowledge transfer, but a real center of spiritual renewal. It laid the foundation for a self-confident Sorbian educational movement that wanted to take matters into its own fate.
Language as the core of national culture
Andreas Seiler, Johann Ernst Schmaler, Johann Peter Jordan and Andreas Lubensky devoted themselves to the cultivation of the Sorbian language with unshakable power. Their efforts had a lasting impact on the young generation of teachers and anchored their mother tongue as the core of national identity. In the years of training, the spiritual foundation stone was laid, which later led these men todemocratic forces within the Sorbian people. During the middle-class revolution of the bourgeois revolution of that era and in the national rebirth phase, they bravely stood up for their ideals. Their words and deeds combined cultural awakening with political self-determination.
A symbol of resistance and cultural self-assertion
The Brusewitz house was much more than a mere building, as it symbolized the rise of a Sorbian educational movement. This movement held its own against social disadvantage, cultural marginalization and political oppression. The atmosphere of that time was characterized by young teachers who were with courage, education and a deep awareness of their cultural backgroundacted. They laid the foundation for a new Sorbian self-assertion that has an effect on to our days. The importance of this place for Sorbian history cannot be overestimated, because here the development of national culture was inextricably linked to the people who thought and shaped their future.
