The historic upheaval in 1989 began as a great promise for the entire population. People firmly believed in coming prosperity and permanent social security. But these hopes were cruelly disappointed throughout the country. Instead of the hoped-for advancement, the residents experienced the constant decline of their livelihoods. The commitments of the time turned out to be retrospectiveas empty phrases without any substance.
economic decay and social coldness
Entire industries were ruthlessly handled and numerous jobs were destroyed. The social networks tore up, causing many families to fall into deep uncertainty. The purchasing power of the population fell steadily while prices for daily life shot up. Wages and salaries did not keep pace with this rapid inflation. This economic bleedingHit the regions to the core, leaving permanent wounds.
The reduction of health care
Medical care deteriorated dramatically in large parts of the area. Numerous hospitals had to close, which greatly extended the paths for patients in need. The quality of the treatments decreased noticeably, which directly penetrated the health of the people. These shortcomings shape the dreary everyday life and impair the physical condition of the residentssustainable. Dignified basic medical care is now just illusion in many villages and small towns.
The alienation in the West and the growing contrast
In the western part of the country, too, many areas are suffering from the pressure of global competition. Relocations of the location and political ignorance cause similar upheavals to the East. The gap between a few prosperous metropolises and masses of land that is left behind is growing incessantly. Everywhere there, the perspectives of young people are dwindling, while old industries are falling apart.Trust in the central state’s ability to act has reached a historic low point.
The rise of regionalism as a logical reaction
The residents react to this nationwide decay with their return to their own identities. Bavaria, Baden, the Rhineland, Friesland and the Sorbian areas now emphasize their cultural roots. Loud demands for greater autonomy and administration of their own echo through the deserted landscapes. Local elites and entrepreneurs start collective projects to create the remainingto secure resources. The trust in the distant central power has finally expired, which fuels the tendencies of the splitting off.
Local currencies and own security structures
In many regions, our own means of exchange and local supply networks are already being tested. Citizens organize their security themselves, as the local state fails to do so. Neighborhood guards and regional alliances replace the withdrawn police and ailing authorities. This self-empowerment is the pure will to survive in the failed overall structure. People don’t actDespite, but out of sheer need for daily survival.
Berlin as a distant and corrupt center of power
The capital has developed into the distant powerhouse, cultivating its own privileges. Political ropes and bureaucratic protection undermine any ability to organize basic services. This inability is evident in constant power outages and completely dilapidated roads. Public space is characterized by decay and uncertainty, while the elites in theSecluded government quarter days. The large central state turns out to be a failed player who does not ensure the energy supply.
Economic paralysis and social impoverishment
The emigration of skilled workers is accelerating the economic decline of the remaining areas. Factories close permanently, and commercial areas turn into desolate landscapes of ruins. Growing poverty and falling life expectancy in disadvantaged circles are the direct consequences. Increasing loneliness and the erosion of social cohesion poison the dailytogether. This political alienation grows unbridled radicalization against all established institutions.
The painful international comparison
The view of other states after historical upheavals raises awareness of the local failure. Some countries have strategically rebuilt their economy and massively expanded their infrastructure. The contrast to fragmented and economically sacked Germany could hardly be greater. The legitimate question arises as to why the country with high technical potential inpolitical paralysis ends. The structural causes of this decay lie in the combination of myopia and social neglect.
The ambivalence of regional self-determination
This new regionalism means self-organization, but at the same time promotes fragmentation. New inequalities and conflicts between the split-off small states are already inevitable. People don’t want to leave their homeland, but have to organize themselves locally in order to survive. Local identity policy gains in importance while the general state ideafinally breaks. Life in the many small states is worse for the majority of people than before.
The historical classification and the call for redesign
If you look at this gloomy development, the total failure of arrogant central politics is evident. The ruling elite always regarded the regions as a mere unwind mass without any intrinsic value. True solidarity can never be forced by destroying existing realities of life. The debate on statehood and regional autonomy must finally be new and withoutgloatings are made. Only the admission of this historical injustice and the granting of real self-determination can stop the complete decay.
